The Berlin Marathon is one of the five major city marathons in the world and has a reputation for fast times. The world record has been broken there in each of the last two years. Roger Barrett of Mayo AC trained hard for this year's race and had a brilliant run finishing with a personal best in 2:30:14 - well inside his 2:32:53 finish at the 2012 Dublin Marathon. Roger narrowly missed out on his target sub 2:30, but on this form he will soon achieve that goal. Well done too to Michael Canty (Ballina AC) who also achieved a personal best finishing in 2:36. Last Saturday in the tough Clew Bay Half Marathon, Mayo AC had more success when Noel Gibbons who came home first in 1:22: 27.

A number of Mayo runners were in action last weekend and put in good showings at the Flatline Half Marathon in Athlone. Ballina AC's Nora Newcombe was the winner of the women’s event in a time of 79.57, coming off a good performance the week before in the Charlestown 10K and the Tullamore Half Marathon two weeks ago. There were 14 Mayo AC runners in the event using it as practice for the upcoming Dublin Marathon. John Byrne was the best Mayo AC finisher coming home in fourth place overall in a time of 73.26, Brendan Hession finished in 32nd place in a time of 80.27 which was a new personal best. The other Mayo AC finishers were Paul Reynolds, Sean Murphy, Ann McDonnell, Laura Heneghan, Val P Glynn, Monica Joyce, Tracy Durkan, Mags Connell, Rebecca McHugh, Trish Kavanagh, Barbara Ronayne, and Finian Joyce.

Elvery’s MacHale Park is the place to be this weekend, when the best eight senior club teams in the county do battle for a place in the semi-finals of this year’s club championship.

There was an excellent turnout for the third annual Charlestown 10k on Saturday. It was also the fourth race in Mayo AC's 2014 Move2Improve Series. The field of 194 was over 80 up on 2013, testament to great work by an enthusiastic local organising team led by Christina Duffy, who was ably assisted by Kilmovee 10k supremo John Roddy, and supported by a host of local sponsors.

Six Mayo AC runners made the trip to Tullamore on Sunday for the National Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Harriers Stadium was full, busy, wet and there was a full seven hours of exciting events. The Mayo AC six were rewarded with a fine total of 10 medals. Angela O'Connor and John Byrne made their track debuts and enjoyed the experience. Both of them won medals in some very competitive category races. There were other fine performances too from Margaret Glavey and Pauline Moran.

It was a glorious sunny evening with a welcome breeze for the 22nd running of the Balla races. The Balla 10k is the most keenly anticipated in the Mayo calendar and the tough course has provided challenges for all comers and all levels over the years. It was the third race in Mayo AC Move2Improve Series sponsored by C&C Cellular. Freddy Keron-Sittuk from Raheny Shamrock AC returned to retain the title he won last year and was the clear winner in a time of 33.01, though well outside his 2013 course record. Clubmate Ian Conroy was second and with Bernard Roe fourth their clubmate David Grange also finished well as Raheny Shamrocks also took the team prize.

Claremorris native Aine Gallagher (Mayo AC) took part in the fifth Energia Belfast 24-hour event last weekend. The event incorporated a 12-hour women's race. Aine was first to finish and completed a distance of 105k in the 12 hours - a personal best along with being a track record and a Irish record. Aine is no stranger to the ultra zone, as she has competed previously at Energia events and completed the Connemara Ultra marathon.

Galway athletes came home with a massive haul of medals from the second day of the National Championships, including two gold medal-winning performances from Conor Duggan and Louis Corr.

Joan Walsh and her Ballinrobe Fit4Life team did a great job as usual in organising the third race in Mayo AC Summer 5k Series on another very hot Tuesday evening. The water stop at 2.5k was very welcome, as was the shade of the trees from 3k. There was a great turn out with 226 finishers of the event with a lot of the ‘big guns’ of Mayo racing out in force on the course. The course was fast and flat and despite the heat there were plenty of PBs and happy faces at the finish line. The top three male finishers were Conor Dolan (GCH) in 15:49, TJ McHugh in 17:28, and Noel Gibbons (Mayo AC) IN 17:29. Catherine Conway was the first woman over the line in 18:49, with Sarah Syron (Mayo AC) in second place in 19:24, and Pauline Moran (Mayo AC) in third place in 20:59. Kilmovee was buzzing on Saturday and there was more than just spring in the air. The crossroads on the R325 was full of orange clad marshals, dandelions lined the roadsides, tulips saluted from gardens, an array of green sun flowered Hospice t-shirts mingled with multicoloured runners and walkers, and sprinkled with a host of red and green Mayo AC vests. The yellow balloon arch at the start line did a spectacular malfunction which added to the excitement but did nothing to deflate the occasion. There was a record turnout of 545 entrants on a sunny Easter Saturday for the fifth Kilmovee 10k run and walk. This was the first event in Mayo AC's 2014 Move 2 Improve six race series, which is open to all entrants. It was excellently organised by Kilmovee Shamrocks GAA club and the local community in aid of Mayo/Roscommon Hospice. Ironman athlete Gerry Duffy was a guest and said: “It was the most friendly race I've ever been at, a fantastic event, testament to John Roddy's leadership and the involvement of the whole Kilmovee Community team.” The big field was well streamed out as they crossed over Aghadiffen Bridge into Roscommon after the 3k mark. Matt Bidwell, Roger Barrett, last year's winner Con Marshall, and Aidan Callaghan were in the lead group, with John Byrne - recovering from his PB run at last Sunday's Rotterdam marathon - and Timmie Glavey further back.
